Corrosion-Resistant SmartBolts® for Harsh Environments 

Harsh operating environments can make routine bolt inspections difficult. Corrosion, grease, dust, mud, salt spray and fluid splashes can accelerate wear and obscure visual indicators on critical fasteners, making it harder for maintenance teams to assess bolt condition and identification details. 

SmartBolts make bolt tension visible through our patented Visual Indication System™. Red means loose. Black means tight. This allows maintenance teams to check clamp force at a glance without relying solely on repeated torque checks. 

For corrosive or contamination-prone environments, SmartBolts can be configured with contamination seals, Data Shield technology and corrosion-resistant coating options to help keep both the fastener and visual indication clear in service. 


Key Customizations for Corrosive Environments
 

Contamination Seals
SmartBolts can be supplied with a flush, clear epoxy seal that encapsulates the indicator window. This helps protect the micro-indicator from dust, mud, grease, and fluid splashes, while allowing the bolt head to be wiped clean during inspections. 

Data Shield Technology 
Data Shield helps preserve important product identification details throughout the bolt’s service life. A recessed metal ring with laser-etched information is embedded in the bolt head, helping the details remain visible by eye or with a smartphone camera. 

Advanced Protective Coatings 
Standard plain or basic zinc-plated bolts can quickly rust in harsh environments. SmartBolts can be customized with corrosion-resistant base materials or specialised coatings to match the application. 

Common anti-corrosion coating options include: 

  • Black Phosphate and Oil (PO): Adds a porous layer and oil barrier for moderate protection in general-use environments.
  • Aluminum/Zinc Flake (AZF): Provides high-level corrosion protection through an aluminium and zinc-based coating layer. It can also reduce friction, supporting more controlled tensioning without over-stressing the bolt. GEOMET® or EcoGuard are two well-known advanced coating technologies that offer this type of protection.
  • Zinc Electroplating (Clear Zinc or Yellow Zinc): Offers strong corrosion protection but should be selected carefully for high-strength fasteners where hydrogen embrittlement may be a concern.
  • Other coating options: Hot-dipped galvanizing, zinc-nickel, GEOMET® 321 and Xylan/PTFE coatings may also be specified depending on the operating environment, corrosion exposure, and installation requirements. 


Temperature Limits
 

The optical indicator and seal materials have operating temperature limits. In high-temperature corrosive environments, heat exposure should be checked to ensure it will not degrade the synthetic seals or internal indicator fluid. 

Standard operating temperature limits are -4°F to 168°F (-20°C to 75°C).
