Why Visual Bolt Tension Verification Matters in Busway Systems 

Busway systems distribute electrical power across data centers, manufacturing facilities, commercial buildings, and other critical infrastructure. Within these systems, bolted connections join busway sections and help maintain a reliable electrical connection.  

When a connection is not properly secured electrical resistance rises, generating excess heat which increases the risk of electrical failure and unplanned downtime. 

That makes secure bolted connections important not just during installation but throughout the service life of the busway. The challenge is knowing whether those connections are still properly tensioned after the system has been in operation. 

 

Why Clamp Force Matters More Than Tightening Torque 

Torque is commonly used during installation because it provides a practical way to tighten fasteners to a specified value. 

The limitation is that torque measures the rotational force applied to the fastener, not the tension holding the joint together. Friction under the bolt head, in the threads and between mating surfaces can affect how much tension is achieved, meaning the same torque value does not always produce the same clamp force. 

Torque also does not provide any ongoing indication of what happens after installation. 

Thermal cycling, vibration, and operating conditions can gradually change the tension of a bolted joint. A connection that was correctly installed can therefore experience changes in tension during service without those changes being immediately visible. 

For busway manufacturers and maintenance teams, this creates two separate requirements: achieving the correct tension during installation and having a practical way to verify that tension later.
